Care & Technology

Personal explorations of how technology might support personhood and everyday life for older people. Drawing on person-centred approaches (including Kitwood’s emphasis on comfort, identity, attachment, occupation and inclusion), these concept studies examine ways to reduce unnecessary dependence while protecting dignity. Concept studies only — not finished products.

Transfer support
12 Mar 2025

Compact transfer support

Mobile aid for short indoor moves (bed to toilet). Helps with sit-to-stand and limited transport while the person remains as independent as possible.

Open question: how much physical securing is compatible with a sense of control and identity during a short transfer.

Bathroom guidance
3 Jun 2025

Bathroom guidance unit

Depth-sensing (no camera) device that gives simple spoken step-by-step help for toileting and hygiene. Privacy first.

Observation: once the sequence is known, shorter prompts better preserve a sense of competence.

Guided vacuum
19 Sep 2025

Guided floor vacuum

Normal-size stick vacuum with vision that detects dirt and gives directional voice cues (“left”, “right”, “forward”). Aimed at people with low vision or limited mobility.

The cue should end as soon as the task is complete, supporting occupation without unnecessary direction.

Sealed support
8 Jan 2026

Sealed washable support

Well-sealed garment with inlet/outlet tubes for a short external wash cycle. Explores reducing the need for full transfers for cleaning.

Acceptability depends on whether the connection feels quick and under the person’s control.

Bed and toilet unit
Feb 2026

Bed + docking toilet unit

Large bed that moves to sitting position. Sections open so a stable toilet unit can dock underneath, cover the area, wash, and dry. Then everything closes and the bed returns to sleep position.

Aims to protect comfort and privacy by reducing transfers. Reliability of docking and skin safety remain open.

Shower enclosure
Mar 2026

Shower enclosure + transfer chair

Compact wheelchair designed only for moving into a fixed wash-and-dry enclosure in a normal bathroom. Person stays seated; system washes and dries; chair rolls out.

Supports inclusion in ordinary bathroom routines for people who can transfer but need assistance with washing.
